Developing adaptive computer-based treatments for aphasia rehabilitation

This 5-year clinical trial funded by the NIH (1R01DC019325-01A1) builds off of our previous work on speed-accuracy tradeoffs and adaptive distributed practice, and seeks to integrate complementary learning principles in computer-based aphasia treatment via adaptive modeling. Picture-based naming treatments for anomia are widely used in aphasia rehabilitation, but current treatment approaches do not address the long-term retention of naming abilities and do not focus on using these naming abilities in daily life. The current research aims to evaluate novel anomia treatment approaches to improve long-term retention and generalization to everyday life and develop new aphasia-specific learning and word production models to improve aphasia rehabilitation. This clincal trial is divided into two sub-studies. The first study, titled "Balancing Effortful and Errorless Learning in Naming Treatment for Aphasia" involves picture naming practice using adaptive naming deadlines. For more information on enrolling in this study please visit Pitt+Me. The second study, titled "Adaptive Trial Scheduling in Naming Treatment for Aphasia" involves picture naming practice that combines massed and distributed practice via adaptive trial scheduling. For more information on enrolling in this study please contact Alyssa Kelly, MA, CCC-SLP (ank155@pitt.edu; 412-383-6943).
